Don't Pity Me! (1 Corinthians 15:17-19; 58)
Sermon Notes
Sunday, 31 March 2013 00:00

In our “Resurrection Sunday” message we were reminded that ~
~ #1. If the resurrection is not true, then my faith is futile.
I Corinthians 15:17a And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile;
That is because the power/effectiveness of faith resides in the OBJECT of one’s faith!

~ #2. If the resurrection is not true, then I am still in my sins!
I Corinthians 15:17b you are still in your sins!
The “spiritual bath” (John 13:10) of forgiveness and cleansing which Jesus promises to every believer is not only for past sins committed before our faith in Christ, but also for all of our future sins all the way to the grave (think “positional forgiveness”). In this sense, Jesus guarantees that no believer will die in his sins (John 8:24).

~ #3. If the resurrection is not true, then there is no hope beyond the grave.
I Corinthians 15:18 Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.
Our ‘blessed hope’ as believers is based on the empty tomb on that first Resurrection Sunday now 1,980 years ago!

~ #4. If the resurrection is not true, then there’s no eternal life nor eternal rewards!
I Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most pitiable.
I Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
While the gift of eternal life and prize of eternal rewards are two different things, they both hinge on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The smallest obedience (blessing some thirsty one with a cup of cold water – Matthew 10:42) will be remembered by our wonderful Lord at the Bema Seat (Hebrews 6:10)!

Because of His resurrection, we are most blessed – far from being most pitiable!

Thought for the day: If you add anything to God’s “by-grace-through-faith salvation” then you don’t have grace, faith or salvation (i.e., eternal life)!
