Am I ‘losing it’?! John 6:35-40

Memory Verse: John 6:39 – Now this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that I shall lose none of all that He has given Me, but shall raise him up on the last day. (Living Water)

Am I losing it?  Are you losing it?  Well,, that depends …

1.  If we’re talking about “things” like my wallet, my cell phone, or my keys, then the answer is, “Yes, probably!”

2.  If we’re talking about something like my temper, then the answer is, “Yes, occasionally.”

3.  If we’re talking my sanity, then the answer is, “Well, I hope not, but sometimes, I wonder!”

4.  If we’re talking about something like discernment and wisdom, then the answer is, “Yes, we can lose that …

… through failing to seek it as a most valuable asset (Proverbs 2:1-7),

… through a lack of gratitude to God (Romans 1:21), and

… through a wrong focus over time and a turning our back on God (Romans 1:18-32).

5.  If we’re talking about something like a friendship, then the answer is, “I hope not, but it can happen.”

6.  If we’re talking about something like the closeness of my relationship with a family member, then the answer is, “We can lose fellowship, but never the relationship.”

7.  If we’re talking about eternal life, then the answer is, “No.  Never!  Absolutely not!”

John 6:35-40

35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it** him up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (NKJV) ** Majority Text reads “him” instead of “it.”

Three final observations from John 6:35-40

1.  All the Father has given to the Son will come to the Son in faith (6:37).

2.  Of all the Father has given the Son, the Son will lose nothing (6:39).

3.  If even one person who comes to faith in Jesus for everlasting life should end up lost, then Jesus failed to do the will of the Father!

As the hymn writer wrote:

Jesus never fails!  Jesus never fails!

Heaven and earth may pass away, but Jesus never fails!
