Focusing on the Christ of Christmas (Luke 2)
Sermon Notes
Sunday, 22 December 2013 00:00

On Sunday we focused on the Christ of Christmas in Luke 2, noting the references and responses to the Babe born in Bethlehem. 25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

We learn four things about Simeon from this verse:
(1) just
(2) devout
(3) waiting for the consolation of Israel
(4) the Spirit was upon him – Just as the Holy Spirit empowered Zecharias to prophesy (1:67) concerning his son John (Baptist), so now the Holy Spirit was upon Simeon and would empower his Nunc Dimittis (Latin for Now dismiss) speech, as it is called, in 2:25-35.

The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not see death before he had seen the promised Messiah. In his close fellowship with God, Simeon had received a personal revelation from God concerning the arrival of Messiah during his own lifetime. Simeon came by the Spirit into the temple so that he arrived there before the couple, Joseph and Mary, brought the Child Jesus whom they would bring to do for Him according to the custom of the Law. Led by the Spirit, Simeon would see the promised Messiah who will fulfill his eager expectations.

36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for {same root word as in 2:25 of Simeon waiting for} redemption in Jerusalem.

What are you anticipating this Christmas? As children, we doubtlessly looked forward with anticipation and eager expectation to unwrapping our gifts. Simeon and Anna both looked forward to and awaited the coming of their Savior. Just as certainly as Jesus came to this earth the first time, so also He is surely coming again! I hope that as we enjoy this Christmas time with family and friends that we will be eagerly looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ! If we live in this way, we will not be disappointed at how He transforms our outlook and attitudes.

May you enjoy a truly joy-filled Christmas!
Pastor Dave
